Answer

When people think about "swing dance," they usually think of East Coast Swing or Jitterbug, which is a 6-count, "step, step, rock-step" dance. It is a dance style that became popular in the late swing/early rock-and-roll period, and it is the dance that most beginners learn first. While East Coast Swing is a perfectly good swing dance, it's not the only swing dance out there. The term "swing dance" is really an umbrella term for the dozens dances that people did to swing music from the 1920s through the 1950s. Many of these dances are still being enjoyed in different parts of the country. Popular swing dances today include Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston, East Coast Swing, and Shag. Related dances such as Blues and West Coast Swing also enjoy popularity.

A historical overview of some of these dances can be found here and a few searches on Youtube will yield samples of these different dances.
