Ummm. I appreciate the hard work that you have done, but I am not really a fan of the change. And this isn't a "not liking change" thing.
1) There is no 'View unread topics" filter. This was my most frequently used link, followed by: "Mark Forums Read". There needs to be a "Mark Forums Read" button on the "Recent Discussions" tab.
It isn't really change unless you lose some feature that you liked
Still, I have a couple of solutions for you. The best solution is the fact that the Recent Topics list on the front page now tags updated topics for you. Anything tagged "(NEW)" has an unread post in it. You can open up all of the "(NEW)" topics in separate tabs and there you go.
Also in the "Recent Discussions" tab in the top of the forum, there is a drop-down box where you can filter by time (including "since last visit"). Once you have it set, you should be able to bookmark that page and go right to it.
2) I feel there is wasted space, this might just be a function of re-aligning the columns.
The current layout is pretty narrow. It's on my "try to fix if its not too annoying" list,
4) Mainly, I don't see the point of the change. I don't see how it adds to the site in a way the other forums didn't. Yes, having the side bar of links on the side is nice, but I don't think it really adds that much value. Forums are dying across the country and I don't think upgrading to a different platform is going to draw people in. I'm still a HUGE fan of the forum to discuss events and arrange carpools and to get people to come out to things and it seems the rest of the scene is moving beyond that, much to my chagrin.
My hypothesis is that community forums are becoming less popular because a lot of the "casual" traffic that used to drive the forums has moved to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, our previous setup made social networking integration very difficult.
Our recent update is really only phase 1. Now that the entire site is running on one software package, our next step is social networking integration.
